چکیده

*This research was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy under Contract No. DE-AC02-76CH00016. Experiments which are planned for the Superconducting Super Collider and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider will involve interactions in which detectors will need to identify and localize hundreds or even thousands of particle tracks simultaneously. Most types of conventional position sensitive, proportional detectors with projective geometry are not able to unravel the individual tracks in these environments. We have been investigating several forms of sub-divided cathode readout to address this problem. We report here on geometric charge division using chevron shaped cathode pads which lie in rows underneath each anode wire. Investigations have quantified the nonlinear effects due to avalanche angular localization, and how these become negligible with proper design of the cathode pad. Differential non-linearity of ±5%, and position resolution in the region of 50 μm rms, have been achieved.

Investigation of Chevron Cathode Pads for Position Encoding in Very High Rate, Gas Proportional Chambers*

New techniques for position encoding in very high rate particle and photon detectors will be required in experiments planned for future particle accelerators such as the Superconducting Super Collider and new, high intensity, synchrotron sources. We are carrying out a detailed theoretical and experimental study of a position interpolation technique in which a row of chevron shaped cathode pads ...

2 00 6 Spatial resolution of a GEM readout TPC using the charge dispersion signal

A large volume Time Projection Chamber (TPC) is being considered for the central charged particle tracker for the detector for the proposed International Linear Col-lider (ILC). To meet the ILC-TPC spatial resolution challenge of ∼ 100 µm with a manageable number of readout pads and channels of electronics, Micro Pattern Gas Detectors (MPGD) are being developed which could use pads comparable i...

A Study of Mwpc with Chevron Cathode Pad Readout

An investigation of MWPCs with interpolating chevron shaped cathode pad readout has been carried out as part of the R&D for the particle tracking system of the PHENIX detector at RHIC. Two prototype chambers were designed and constructed. Their response to minimum ionizing particles was tested with secondary beams from the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) at Brookhaven National Laboratory...

Simulating the Charge Dispersion Phenomena in Micro Pattern Gas Detectors with a Resistive Anode

The TPC for the International Linear Collider (ILC) will need to measure about 200 track points with a transverse resolution close to 100 μm. The resolution goal is beyond the capability of the conventional proportional wire/cathode pad TPC and Micro-Pattern Gas Detectors (MPGD) are being developed to meet the challenge. The standard MPGD readout techniques will, however, have difficulty in ach...

TPC Performance in Magnetic Fields with GEM and Pad Readout

A novel charged particle tracking device, a high precision time projection chamber with gas electron multiplier and pad readout, is a leading candidate as the central tracker for an experiment at the International Linear Collider. To characterize the performance of such a system, a small TPC has been operated within a magnetic field, measuring cosmic-ray and laser tracks. Good tracking resoluti...
